Spector – Iconic basses since 1976

Spector was founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 1976 by Stuart Spector and Alan Charney, who were part of a cooperative sharing space in an old factory building. Among the other members of the cooperative was Ned Steinberger, who became interested in Spector’s work and offered to design a bass. Ned had embraced the philosophy that “form follows function” and applied it to what would become the now-legendary NS body. This elegant bass body, with its ergonomic and streamlined design, combined with the neck-through construction that Spector was already using, resulted in the first NS-1 bass in March 1977. The NS-2, featuring two pickups, followed in 1979. At the beginning of The Police’s Synchronicity Tour in 1983, Sting acquired a white Spector NS-2, giving Spector its major introduction to a global audience.

In 1986, the Legend Series was introduced, manufactured in Asia, and in 1987 Spector began its collaboration with the Czech Republic, giving rise to the highly successful Euro Series. Today, Spector is headquartered on Long Island, New York, while its USA basses are still made in the same woodworking shop in Woodstock, New York, that Stuart Spector moved into several decades ago.Spector basses’ design, craftsmanship and history have made them a leading choice among some of the world’s finest bass players.
